I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of trenching shovels.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.

C. Inspection

1. Inspect handle is secured tightly to the tool.
2. Inspect handle for cracks, breaks, splinters, bends, and sharp edges.
3. Inspect handles to ensure they are clear of oil, grease, lubricant and/or any other material that could cause loss of grip on the tool.

D. Use

1. Place the tip of the shovel in the desired location and place your foot on the step.
2. Apply force to obtain penetration into the ground.
3. Once the blade in completely buried in the ground, turn the shaft slightly.
4. Leverage the shovel up and move the spoils to the desired location. Use proper lifting techniques.

E. Maintenance

No maintenance is required for this tool.
