I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of trailer scissor hoists.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.

A. Potential Hazards

C. Inspection

1. Check hoist  for signs of looseness, cracking/broken welds, worn hoses, fluid leaks, etc.
2. Check pivot/hinge points for cracks, broken welds, missing snap rings.
3. Check hoses and fittings for signs of wear, cracking and leaks.
4. Check all bracket bolts, pins, and welds for looseness and failure.
5. Inspect hoist frame for cracks, loose pins, bolts, etc.
6. Check and maintain hydraulic fluid level.
7. Check body prop system for cracks, broken welds, and loose fasteners.
8. Check DC electric pump cables and wiring for frays, broken casing, rubbing.
9. Check that all cords, cables, hoses, etc. are secured to chassis with clamps or wire ties.
10. Check all safety covers and guards are in place.

D. Use

1. Press the “UP” switch on the electric pump system.
2. Check the load continuously while dumping. Lower box if you see an unusual or potentially hazardous load shift developing. Do not attempt to shift load by jerking trailer. This can result in hoist and equipment failure.
3. After load has been dumped, move forward slightly and lower body to the fully down position. (Make sure no one has positioned themselves under the dump bed. Do not drive the truck with its box in the up positions). Lock tailgate before moving.

E. Maintenance

1. Keep pivot/hinge points greased.
2. Keep hoist system and pump unit clean and debris free.
3. Lubricate hoist grease fittings.
