I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of speed squares.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.

  1. Inspect for dents, cracks or faded markings and replace as needed. 

D. Use

Creating Square Lines

  1. Hold the fence against the top or bottom edge of the long side of the project.
  2. Once fence is secure, glide writing instrument along the long side of the tool. 

Creating Multiple Lines

  1. Hold the fence against the top or bottom edge of the long side of the project. 
  2. Look at the inner triangle opening. 
  3. Use the guide to make multiple lines. 
  4. Adjust the square left or right of the project to make additional lines. 

Creating Scribe Marks

  1. Hold the fence against the top or bottom edge of the long side of the project. 
  2. Check the scribe marks found inside the inner triangle. 
  3. Use these marks to create straight lines along with the piece. 

Creating 45-degree angles

  1. Turn the speed square until the angled side lines up along your mark. 
  2. Draw the line to draw your 45 degree angle. 

Creating more than 90-degree angles

  1. If you wish to make any degree angle from a 180 degree plane, look for the word Pivot. 
  2. Place the 90-degree point along your mark and pivot your speed square to your angle until it’s lined up along your workpiece. 
  3. To go higher than 90 degrees (Example: 105 degrees. 105-90=15 From the bottom, after 90 degrees to the 15 degrees mark is 105 degrees) Subtract 90 degrees from the angle and the result will be the mark on the square. 

Additional Care

  1. Do not drop or throw speed square. 
  2. Carry tool safely using a toolbox or tool belt that can fasten speed square.

E. Maintenance

  1. Wipe with a soft cloth after use. 
  2. Use water and soap to remove any pen, pencil or crayon marks. 
  3. If speed square is plastic, wipe with alcohol.
