I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of sharp shooters.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual. 

A. Potential Hazards

C. Inspection

  1. Inspect handle is secured tightly to the tool.
  2. Inspect handle for cracks, breaks, splinters, bends and sharp edges.
  3. Inspect handles to ensure they are clear of oil, grease lubricant and/or any other material that could cause loss of grip on the tool

D. Use

  1. Sharpshooters are best for penetrating sod, hard soil, and dirt with rocks but not made for scooping much dirt.
  2. Place the sharp edge of the shovel in the desired location of excavation.
  3. Place your foot at the top edge of the shovel near the handle and step down to allow the shovel to bite into the material.
  4. Use a prying motion to lift shovel and material and move to desired location. Use proper lifting techniques

No maintenance is required for this tool.
