Pole Setter Usage

I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of pole setters.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.

A. Potential Hazards

  • Crushing Hazard
  • Pinch Points Hazard
  • Hydraulics Under Pressure Hazard

C. Inspection

  1. Check that the attachment mount levers are in the locked position and the wedges are fully engaged into the holes of the attachment.
  2. If equipped, check the tightness of the chain and lubricate.

D. Use

  1. Do not exceed the loader manufacturer’s rated operating capacity (ROC).
  2. The right butterfly switch controls rotation.
  3. The left joystick controls the clamp.
  4. On some machines to operate the clamp, press and hold either the left or right button on the left joystick while at the same time using the butterfly switch on the right joystick. On other machines you need to press and hold either the up or down button on the left joystick while at the same time using the butterfly switch on the right joystick.
  5. Before leaving the loader operator’s seat, always lower the lift arms fully, engage the brake and stop the engine.

Installing Attachment

  1. Slide the attachment on the shaft.
  2. Install the retaining pins.
  3. Install the cotter pin.
  4. Tighten jam nut against shaft.
  5. Connect the 1/4″ hydraulic coupler to the base.

Removing Attachment

  1. Relieve clamping pressure by turning the ball valve.
  2. Turn the yellow handle up to relieve the pressure.
  3. Return the handle to the down position to get your clamp hydraulic circuit back.
  4. Remove the cotter pin.
  5. Remove the retaining pin.
  6. Loosen jam nut.
  7. Disconnect the 1/4″ hydraulic couplers.
  8. Slide the attachment off the shaft.

Adjusting Clamp Pressure

  1. Release the jam nut and turn out.
  2. Turn the plunger counterclockwise to reduce the pressure.
  3. For full clamping pressure and regular operation, keep plunger turned in all the way with a clockwise turn.
  4. Lock jam nut after adjusting.

E. Maintenance

  1. Check all welds for cracks.
  2. Check for wear in the shaft and check for cracks. Also check the stop for breakage.
  3. Add grease to zerks.
  4. Check for oil leaking form the hydraulic lines.
  5. Check for wear in the bumpers in the jaws, replace if worn.
  6. Check the tightness of each nut and bolt and make sure it has the proper torque.
  7. Check the electrical to ensure there are no bare or loose wires coming out of the attachment.
