I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of phase sequence indicators.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.

A. Potential Hazards

  • Electrical Shock Hazard
  • Fire Hazard

B. PPE

  • Standard PPE
  • Rubber Gloves
  • Face Protection
  • FR clothing

C. Inspection

  1. Examine the test leads for damaged insulation or exposed metal. Do not use test leads if they are damaged. 
  2. Check test lead continuity.
  3. Check for any damage.

D. Use

Determine the Rotary Field Direction

  1. Connect the test probes to the end of the test leads. 
  2. Connect the test probes to the three main phases. 
  3. Either clockwise or counter-clockwise rotary indicator illuminates showing the type of rotary field direction present. 

Replacing Fuses

  1. Check the fuse using a simple continuity test. 
  2. Hold the probe in front of the finger guard and unscrew the tip in a counter-clockwise direction.
  3. Remove the defective fuse from the fuse holder. 
  4. Insert a new fuse  in the fuse holder and reassemble the probe. 

E. Maintenance

  1. Periodically wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Clean only with soap and water and remove any residue afterwards.
