
I. Purpose & Scope
To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of gas cans.
II. Definitions
Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots
III. Process
NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual.
A. Potential Hazards
- Flame and/or explosion
B. PPE

C. Inspection
- Inspect for damage, cracks or rust.
- Ensure spark arrestor is still in place.
D. Use
- Discharge static electricity by touching metal such as a car door.
- Place can on the ground at a safe distance from moving or parked vehicles and people.
- Touch the gas pump nozzle to the side of the can, then place nozzle in can, ensure proper grounding and bonding.
- Fill the can slowly to prevent splashing and overflow, leaving a few inches of space for fume expansion.
- Close lid tightly and clean off any spills.
- When pouring from gas can ensure you are using a funnel and that the funnel is not made of paper.
