I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of extension cords.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots.

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual. 

A. Potential Hazards

  • Electrical Shock Hazards

B. PPE

  • Standard PPE

C. Inspection

  1. Inspect for external defects such as deformed or missing pins or insulation damage.
  2. Inspect for indications of possible internal damage.
  3. Inspect for cracked or frayed sockets.
  4. Inspect for loose or bare wires.
  5. Inspect for loose connections.

D. Use

  1. Ensure extension cord is rated for the intended use.
  2. Ensure GFCI protection is available, and in good repair.
  3. Plug extension cord into power source
  4. Plug tool into extension cord.
  5. When extension cord is no longer needed, unplug cord from tool and power source by the plug and not the cord.

E. Maintenance

No maintenance required for this tool.
