I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of jack hammers.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual. 

A. Potential Hazards

  • Flame and/or explosion hazard
  • Electrical Hazard
  • Crushing Hazard
  • Hazardous Atmosphere
  • Hearing Hazard
  • Vibration Hazard

B. PPE

  • Standard PPE
  • Hearing Protection
  • Metatarsal Protection
  • Respiratory Protection – Recommended

C. Inspection

  1. Inspect for dull or damaged bits
  2. Check for misalignment or binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any other condition that may affect the tool operation.
  3. Check safety bit lock is secure. 
  4. Ensure air connection is clean and secure. 

D. Use

  1. To switch the tool “on”, squeeze and hold the paddle lever. Allow tool to warm up before use.
  2. To switch the tool “off”, release pressure on the paddle lever. The switch is spring loaded and will return automatically.
  3. When placing tool down, ensure the air hose side is facing up. Never place tool down on the air hose. 

E. Maintenance

  1. Clean tool with compressed dry air after each use.

Lockout (Shut-Down) Procedure

  1. Turn off air source. 
  2. Disconnect the air supply.
