Powder Puff

I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of powder puffs.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

NOTE: Work instruction does not supplement the manual. For specific instructions for the exact model please refer to the owner’s manual. 

A. Potential Hazards

C. Inspection

  1. Check for worn cracked or distorted retainer parts
  2. Ensure that all information on the tool is legible.
  3. Check the tamping butt lock screw and secure it tightly as needed.
  4. Check to see that the piston has sufficient drag and adjust packing nut accordingly.

D. Use

  1. For your safety and that of others, keep tool
    against work at all times!
  2. When moving from one work area to another, shut off tool.

E. Maintenance

Hourly

  1. After one hour of operation release the Throttle lever to stop the tool; push the Lubricator Valve inward and hold it in for about ten seconds. Release the valve and depress the throttle lever to resume work.
  2. Rapidly pushing the lubricator valve in and out will not introduce a significant amount of lubricant to the tool.

Daily

  1. At the beginning of each work shift, remove the oil chamber plug and fill the oil chamber with the recommended oil.
  2. Clean parts using proper cleaning solvents in well ventilated areas.
  3. Drain condensate from valve(s) at low point(s) of piping, air filter and compressor tank.
  4. Replenish supply of grease in the grease chamber. Four to six stroke from the grease gun injected through the grease fitting is sufficient.

Lockout (Shut-Down Procedure)

  1. Notify all affected personnel. 
  2. Turn off air source. 
  3. Disconnect the air supply. 
  4. Lockout the connection fitting. 

Start-Up Procedure

  1. Notify all affected personnel that equipment is operational and removal of lockout will occur. 
  2. Remove all tools, equipment and debris from the area. 
  3. Remove lockout from the connection fitting. 
  4. Attach to air supply, turn on air source and test equipment.
