I. Purpose & Scope

To safely and effectively provide instruction on the inspection and proper use of square shovels.

II. Definitions

Standard PPE – High Viz Garment, Hard Hat, Z-87.1 Safety Glasses, Gloves, Pants, Work Boots

III. Process

C. Inspection

1. Inspect handle is secured tightly to the tool.
2. Inspect handle for cracks, breaks, splinters, bends, and sharp edges
3. Inspect handles to ensure they are clear of oil, grease lubricant and/or any other material that could cause loss of grip on the tool

D. Use

1. A square shovel is not intended for digging in undisturbed soil or sod.
2. Plunge the straight flat front edge into the upper area of the material you wish to transport. Use your foot at the curved edge by the handle to assist the shovel further into the material.
3. Do not overload shovel so that it is to heavy or too unwieldly to lift and transport material. Use proper lifting techniques to move material to desired location.
